Polk Whitetail Management

Where it all began

From an early age, I learned the fundamentals of the whitetail woods from one of the best—my father, Rodney Polk. Even in school, I found myself sketching maps of our former 40-acre property, drawing shed antlers and mature bucks in my notebooks instead of paying attention in class. That passion began young and never stopped.

My father and I have spent years hunting together, sharing countless memories and harvesting exceptional whitetails along the way. Today, we have turned that lifelong passion into a reality by helping other landowners and hunters pursue mature whitetails on their own properties.

We specialize in strategic property planning, including access and exit routes, stand placement, and food and water locations. What sets us apart from other whitetail land management consultants is our commitment to truly customized solutions. Every PWM management plan is 100% unique to your property, designed exclusively for your goals and your land. Our recommendations are practical, achievable, and tailored to each client. Most importantly, we provide proven whitetail management strategies built to deliver success for a lifetime.

“Grow the land. Grow the deer.”

Mid-Summer Mock Scrapes

Why are mid-summer mock scrapes so effective—and why do we rely on them so heavily?
The answer is simple: bucks consistently respond to them. When paired with the correct scents and placed strategically, mock scrapes can remain highly active throughout the summer and continue producing results well into the hunting season.

If you’re not incorporating this tactic into your management plan, you’re missing a proven opportunity to inventory and pattern mature deer on your property. Contact us today to learn how we implement mock scrapes—and many other effective strategies—to maximize the potential of your farm.

“They came fully prepared with pre-scouting plans, did a full walk through of both of our hunting properties, and created detailed written plans for each location. Extremely knowledgeable and detailed.”

The Importance of Food Plot Diversity

Food plot diversity plays a critical role in supporting healthy whitetail herds and holding deer on your property year-round. No single crop can meet a deer’s nutritional needs throughout every season. By incorporating a variety of food plot species, you provide consistent, high-quality forage during key periods of fawn development, antler growth and late-season survival.

Diverse food plots improve overall herd health by delivering a balance of protein, carbohydrates, minerals, and digestible energy. They also help reduce browsing pressure on any single crop, allowing plots to remain productive longer into the season.

From a management standpoint, diversity creates flexibility. Different species mature at different times, drawing deer movement across multiple months and increasing daylight activity. This not only improves hunting opportunities but also helps stabilize deer patterns during periods of stress, such as drought or late winter conditions. Food plot diversity allows a landowner to know exactly when and what food source your deer herd are focused on.

Food plot diversity also benefits soil health. Rotating and blending crops improves soil structure, enhances microbial activity (N-P-K), and reduces erosion—leading to stronger plots and better results year after year.

At Polk Whitetail Management, we design food plot systems with purpose. Each blend and rotation is selected based on your property’s soil, layout, pressure levels, and seasonal goals. The result is a sustainable, high-impact food plot strategy that benefits both the land and the deer that depend on it.

If you’re ready to maximize your property’s potential, contact us to build a food plot plan tailored specifically to your farm.

My mom with her 2025 gun buck! We had two years of history with this buck we called “Limp Bizkit”. During the fall of 2024, he sustained a pretty serious leg injury, earning the name. He was a big bodied deer and I am extremely happy my mom got to put her hands on him!

SHED HUNTING: Don’t go toooo early!

It’s natural to feel eager to get back into the woods in search of shed antlers—I understand that excitement well. However, we strongly believe in keeping pressure on your property to an absolute minimum.

When we emphasize “eliminating property pressure,” we’re not only referring to hunting activity from September through December. Late-season pressure is just as important. Reducing human intrusion allows deer—mature bucks in particular—to remain calm and secure. Low-stress environments encourage bucks to stay on your property longer, rather than relocating to neighboring ground.

We recommend running trail cameras until you’re confident that your target bucks have completely shed. Entering a shed-hunting area too early can easily push mature deer off your property. Even if they return days later, there’s a strong chance they may have already dropped their antlers elsewhere.

The takeaway is simple: patience pays off. When you do begin shed hunting, move slowly and cover ground thoroughly. Don’t hesitate to walk the same trail more than once—this approach often produces results.

Some of our most productive shed-hunting locations include bedding areas, food sources, and transition routes between the two. Keep an open mind and search carefully—you never know where a mature buck may have dropped his antlers.

Good luck, and enjoy the process.
